About the Sir James Dunn school council The Sir James Dunn School Council is a forum through which parents and other members of the school community can contribute to improving student achievement and school performance and to enhancing the school's accountability to parents. The council meets about once a month in the school staff room. All parents are welcome to attend these meetings. To find out when the next meeting is, call the school office at 945-7177. The council consists of several parents of students enrolled at the Dunn, the school principal, teacher/school staff representatives, one or more student reps, and a member of the community. The council chair is always a parent member (however, he or she cannot be an employee of the Algoma District School Board). All parents of students enrolled at Sir James Dunn are eligible to stand for election to the school council. Parents who work for the board can be regular members of the council unless they work at the Dunn; however, they must declare their status to the rest of the council. Elections are scheduled for early in the fall; however, in most years, elections are not necessary as the council is able to accommodate all who volunteer. Some of the school council's activities include supporting and enhancing communication between the school and parents; reviewing the school improvement plan; providing feedback on school board initiatives such as the facilities review; supporting fundraising for academic purposes; suggesting and supporting health, safety, and wellness initiatives; and representing the Dunn at meetings of all school council chairs in Algoma District. One good way to find out more about what the school council is working on is to read the school council plan and the minutes of recent meetings. |
