Sir James Dunn operates a daily snack  program for all students who wish to participate.  Apples and bananas are available to students during recesses. The program is funded by Algoma Family Services Nutrition Program and family and service organizations’ contributions.

 

Your child’s safety is our utmost concern. As part of the Ministry and Board’s Safe School Act and to ensure our students’ safety, it is imperative that you contact the school by phone (705-856-2517) or note when your child is absent. If we do not know why your child is absent, we will contact you at home or work or your emergency contact. We want to make sure your child is safe and sound.

 

Bussing is available for all students who live outside Wawa town limits, including Mission, MFN, Hawk Junction, Dubreuilville and White River. JK – Gr. 3 students who live in town may be eligible for bussing depending on the distance they live from the school.

 

Bussing is a privilege. Students are expected to behave properly and respectfully so that all riders can be transported safely to and from school. Inappropriate behaviour may result in loss of bus privileges.

 

In the event that buses are cancelled from the very beginning of the day, families will be notified through our School Messaging system (cell phone, home phone, text and email). When buses are cancelled due to weather, the school usually remains open with normal programming. It is the decision of each family whether to send students to school on those days. You may phone the school if you are unsure.

 

When the school is closed from the very beginning of the day, families will again be notified through our School Messaging system. 

 

It is imperative that we have a current emergency contact person on file in case the school must close during the day or buses are sent home early.

 

There are two major fundraising activities (garbageathon in the autumn and community calendar sales in the spring) that students must participate in if they hope to go on the Toronto trip when they are in Gr. 7 or 8. More information will be sent home early in the year for parents of students who are participating.

 

In addition, the school also has bake sales, pizza lunches, etc. for students who chose to participate. The money from these activities is used to enhance the lives of our students through the purchase of equipment, presentations, etc that are not normally funded by the Board.

 

All bus students may eat lunch at school. Non-bus students whose parents are not home at lunch time and who are young enough to require adult supervision, may eat lunch at school. Students are supervised by noon-hour aides. Students are expected to behave properly, and poor behavior during the lunch hour may result in loss of lunchroom privileges.

 

Because we have staff and students who are allergic to nuts and fish, our school is nut/fish-free. Please do not send any peanut or nut products as well as fish and fish products to school. Thank You.
